Babies have a real affinity with water, and because they’ve spent 9 months floating in the womb, being in warm water feels much more familiar to them than being on dry land. However, this early confidence usually diminishes with time, and can even turn to fear. That’s one of the main reasons why we believe in starting them young. But we never swim a baby against their wishes, and we always incorporate lots of bonding, fun and socialising, so you can be sure that a Water Baby is a happy baby.
As well as being really good fun and energetic, structured lessons are a wonderfully sociable activity, and classmates often become friends and a real source of support.
The Water Babies course teaches using voice commands and learning to respond to these is excellent for your baby’s mental development. Despite looking gentle, the lessons provide your baby with a complete physical workout. Studies have shown that participating babies have improved sleeping and eating patterns – a definite bonus!
Start as soon as you like …
You can begin your Water Babies journey at the start of any term — and the earlier, the better! Our youngest-ever Water Baby was just 2 days old (aaah!). In their first year, a baby’s brain grows more rapidly than at any other time, so it makes sense to start early and maximise their exposure to learning experiences in a variety of environments. And what’s more, NHS guidelines say babies don’t need to have had their vaccinations before they can swim.
…and just carry on
Our Water Babies progress seamlessly through our programme, having great fun while all the time building their confidence and independence in the water. Most of our toddlers can swim short distances by around the age of 2, and have mastered vital skills including how to turn around and hold on and, where possible, how to clamber out. All of this is a great source of pride for you and them (and us!), and offers fantastic safety skills should they ever fall into water. However, children lack the strength and co-ordination to swim properly until they’re 3 or 4: their little bodies just aren’t proportioned for swimming on the surface — so they won’t be learning front crawl just yet.
‘Finally, we’re the only swimming company to have won six national awards in the last five years. Reflecting the fact that we’re really good at what we do.’

My youngest, who is now 2 1/2, has been swimming with Water Babies since her first birthday. I like that they only use selected pools, where the water is a certain temperature - particularly important when they are younger. The classes are not huge, the instructor is in the water as well, so it feels as though we get a lot of individual attention. The lessons are very hands on, and you get very involved, so it is also a great bonding experience for me and my daughter. After 18 months of lessons, we can really see the benefit of the lessons in my daughter's confidence in and near the water. Although they are not the cheapest, I believe we are getting the best quality!
Both my girls have been going to Water Babies classes since they were 10 weeks old. The wide choice of convenient times and pool locations has been really helpful when we've needed to make changes eg: after the birth of my second child, finding a class that would fit in with her naptime. I now feel confident if either of them are near water as so much of the lessons when they were younger were to do with water safety. They have pretended to fall in, and know to turn over and then grab onto the side, and know how to get into a pool safely which gives me great peace of mind. The girls can't wait to go every week and I just wish that they carried on lessons until the children were a bit older as my daughter (and I) will be sad to leave when she is 5 1/2. They've recently introduced ASA gradings which are great as there is a tangible result to their lessons eg: my elder daughter now has a 100m certificate.
We've just started Water Babies for my 5 month old son and we love it. The new release is great, the books with stickers is a cool way of 'remembering' what happened when. Teachers brillient, we just wish the 30 minutes didn't fly by so quickly!!
Water Babies - Bucks & Beds – Hi Natalia, thank you for your lovely review. We love the sticker books too and is a great way to see progress with your little one. We hope you continue to enjoy your Water Babies journey!
Love the concept of water babies, now doing it with my second child. My first is very water confident and loves being in the water. Sessions go very quickly but the repetition works well. The pool we are using is not 'perfect' (too narrow space) but it's ok. Something more local would be even better! Downside is definately the expense, esp. if your baby/child is ill or on holiday. Real shame there are no offers or deals or schemes!

Classes across Buckinghamshire,Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshireare run byTamsin Brewis, whowas so determined to start her baby Sydonie swimming, that for 9 months she commuted all the way from Milton Keynes to Wimbledon (63 miles each way!) for the 30-minute classes each week. Now that’s what we call keen!
The experience began Tamsin’s lifetime commitment to teaching swimming — so much so that for years, she spent precious Saturday mornings teaching at her local pool despite working full-time during the week. "All children should be able to swim," says Tamsin, "as it opens up so many opportunities for you and your family. My own children have gone on to qualify as divers at an early age and they started with the wonderful world of baby swiming."
Tamsin is now joined in the office by Sian, Claire and Kora, and in the pool by her fantastic team of teachers.
I've been really pleased with our swimming lessons with Water Babies - they really look after each child's individual needs as well as the whole group. My son went through a really wobbly stage in the water - it went on for nearly a year! - and they gave me confidence that it was ok for him to be feeling like that and adapted the lessons for him, without disrupting the rest of the class. Now its as though something has just clicked, and he can't wait to get in the water. The only downside is when the classes are full, now that the children are bigger, it can feel a bit busy in the pool with 10 parents and 10 children.
