Monkey Music, the award-winning pre-school music group for children aged 3 months to 4 years, currently holds weekly classes in Lewes, Uckfield, Crowborough, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill.
Founded in London in 1993, Monkey Music nurtures a child's natural love of music so that it will last a lifetime. Based on an exciting and progressive curriculum, Monkey Music provides weekly music classes that are entertaining and educational, and is imaginatively taught by specialist teachers who gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment.
Classes are small and tailor-made, and teachers make full use of the lively 30 minute classes to captivate the children, using a winning combination of catchy music, percussion instruments, visual props and boundless energy, with lots of opportunities for the children to experiment with the instruments and make music of their own.
Over 300 traditional and original songs, musical games and exciting movement ideas are used throughout the curriculum, with the children grouped in small classes according to their age.
Unique to Monkey Music is a new curriculum, especially written for babies from 3 months and in response to demand from parents, who are increasingly aware of the importance of introducing children to music from as young an age as possible.
Called 'Rock 'n' Roll', each class is themed around the everyday life of a very young child and is a special time in the week for parents and carers to simply stop, look at each other and enjoy the sensory experience of sound together.
Rock 'n' Roll - Babies from 3 months
Designed specifically for Mums, Dads and very young babies to share together. During each class the babies and adults are engaged through gentle songs, fascinating sounds and absorbing activities.
Heigh-Ho - Toddlers from 12 months
Young toddlers love being up on their feet so lots of dancing and moving encourages the children to explore the space around them and express the music they hear. The children thrive on the 'steady beat' and are very enthusiastic young members of the Monkey Music band. Themed classes and bold colourful props captivate the children and encourage everyone to get involved.
Jiggety-Jig - 2 and 3 year olds
By this stage, children can really express the joy that music brings them. They sing, dance, play, move, tell stories, speak, and listen to music together. Monkey Music teachers make sure that the children develop their sense of rhythm whilst playing in time to Monkey Music songs and games. Hoops, parachute games and circle dances are always popular Jiggety-Jig activities.
Ding-Dong - 3 and 4 year olds
Up until now the children have been listening and responding to music they hear. Now that their ears have been 'finely tuned' Monkey Music teaches them what music means when they see it written down. Reading simple traditional musical notation comes easily to Monkey Music children as it is integrated into the final part of our interactive curriculum.
Today, thousands of children enjoy Monkey Music classes at more than 300 locations all over the UK.

Monkey Music: Nurturing a Lifetime of Music.
The Monkey Music curriculum was written by Guildhall School of Music & Drama graduate Angie Coates, now Monkey Music's Managing Director. Classes first opened in London in 1993 and Monkey Music's popularity led to the company being franchised in 1998. More than 50 franchises currently operate over 300 locations across the UK.
Specialist teachers are carefully chosen for their natural ability to communicate with and entertain young children and their carers, gently encouraging social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. The company's Head Office is in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

Leo loves going to Laura's Monkey Music class and is incredibly excited when we go (and really loves the bubbles at the end). Felix used to go to a Monkey Music class in London too and both boys have loved it. The things I like are that they socialise with other children and are stimulated by the music, singing and play involved. I also like the fact that Laura takes the lead and I get a little break from being Leo's only playmate. I have no hesitation in recommending Laura and the Monkey Music class.
Maisie has been going to Laura's Monkey Music classes for 5-6 months and both she and I love it. Laura really engages with the babies and they are all mesmerised by her and the lovely songs and musical instruments. It is amazing to see the looks of rapture on the faces of all the babies as we sit in the class. I highly recommend parents to take along their baby for a taster session to try it out. You’ll love it!
Very stimulating group, even for babies under 6 months.
Excellent activity for Mums, Dads and babies. Lovely songs and the right balance for their attention spans. Laura is a brilliant host and remembers all our names - making us feel super welcome. Excellent value for money and will recommend to all my mummy friends!

Alison is classically trained in piano and clarinet and has taught music in schools and the community for over 5 years. She is also a qualified primary school teacher and sings in a band. Alison loves to play and have fun and is really excited to be part of the Monkey Music family.
Amy has a background in Musical Theatre and spent fourteen years appearing in various West End productions. Now a mother of three, she is a freelance Performing Arts teacher working at theatre schools across Sussex. Amy is delighted to have the opportunity to share her energy and enthusiasm for all things musical as part of the Monkey Music family!
Jo worked as a teaching assistant for six years before training as a primary school teacher and has taught children in East Sussex. She discovered Monkey Music as a parent and has enjoyed seeing her daughter flourish in the Heigh-Ho class in Crowborough. She looks forward to bringing the same joy and excitement to other grown-ups and their own little monkeys.
Laura started taking her eldest son to Monkey Music classes when he was five months old and from that first class they both absolutely loved it! She initially taught classes in London then, after moving to Sussex, she decided to start classes here. Laura is a classically trained musician in voice, piano and clarinet and has a Performing Arts degree. Whilst teaching she has seen how children have developed their social skills and gained in confidence. She gets a huge amount of joy out of watching the children that she teaches grow as little people, all through the magic of music.
I took Molly along for a taster session and fell in love with the Monkey Music classes. Laura is fantastic. She has a wonderful way with the children and she is much better than the videos on the Monkey Music website show. Molly and I absolutely love attending each week (they are the only paid class we have kept going this year). Laura has fantastic resources to illustrate the songs which keep the children engaged and interested. The songs are also brilliant - there are so many different ones which means that each term has a good mix of old and new.
We fell in love with the Monkey Music at the taster session and just had to keep going! I highly recommend Laura - it is her enthusiasm and infectious enjoyment that make her classes so great.
