Brighton Dance & Drama offers young children the opportunity to dip a toe into the wonderful world of dance with ballet, tap and theatre school classes to choose from. Ballet is a gentle form of dance, great to calm and relax your child as well as encouraging good posture, musicality and creativity. Tap dancing is one of the most enjoyable forms of dance and for young children it really helps with coordination, rhythm and musicality. Drama builds self-esteem and confidence as well as allowing children to use their imagination. Song and dance lets each child find their voice and have fun dancing to popular music as well as famous film, TV and theatre favourites. Lots of fun guaranteed in all these classes.
For adults there are three ballet classes to choose from weekly. Current students are a mixture of absolute beginners, those who did ballet classes as children and experienced dancers. The beauty of ballet is that you can work to your own ability and I always offer varying levels for you to choose from. Taking regular ballet class is a great way to get fit and toned, increase your flexibility and stamina, improve posture as well as exercising your brain in an informal and friendly environment.

Charlie is very good with the girls in the dance class. She is great at story-telling and teaches the principals of dance without the strict approach to discipline that you get in some dance classes. The combination of tap and ballet is really good too and Charlie listens to ideas and suggestions from us about the dancing. Ellie really enjoys going and the small group size is a bonus for us. Both Ellie and I like the informal and friendly nature.
Amelia has been going to ballet classes with Charlie at Brighton Dance & Drama for nearly 6 months and really enjoys it - especially the getting dressed up bit! Its a really nice small group, and we stay in and watch and sometimes even get the opportunity to join in! I was really pleased as a lot of dance schools don't take children until they are 3.

From the age of two Charlie wanted to be a ballerina and took classes in ballet, tap and modern dance. She went to the prestigious Bush Davies School at the age of 12 and danced with The London Festival Ballet in their production of The Nutcracker. As a student she attended The Urdang Academy of Ballet and Performing Arts in Covent Garden. Charlie successfully auditioned to be a showgirl for ‘Circo Tihany Spectacular’ and toured Mexico City, Monterrey, Laredo, Houston, New Orleans & Miami . She also danced in Casino Espino in Portugal before returning to England with her Equity card to embark upon a career in the film & television industry – credits include – London’s Burning, Between The Lines, Eastenders, The Bill, Goodnight Sweetheart, Good Fortune, Birds of a Feather, 2.4 Children, Gulliver’s Travels & numerous TV commercials. Charlie taught Cecchetti ballet at Hurst Lodge School in Berkshire and then became the principal teacher of The Tramshed Performing Arts Centre in Greenwich teaching ballet, tap, modern, street dance, drama & jazz dance to children and adults from 15 months to 90 years! Her fifty plus tap class The Tramshed Tappers (the average age was 78) appeared with Charlie twice on the Paul O' Grady Show. She continued to indulge in her love of dancing with numerous appearances in productions including – Music of the Night and the pantomime’s Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella at The Bob Hope Theatre. She also was the choreographer for Sleeping Beauty and Singing in the Rain for The Bob Hope Theatre. Charlie is a fully qualified fitness instructor and can teach pre and postnatal ballet and fifty plus classes. You can also book her for hen parties with dance themes such as Fame, Mama Mia, Cabaret and showgirls. She moved to Brighton in 2008 and took a break from teaching to have her first child. Since then she has been teaching ballet to adults at Yoga Mamas and The Brighton Natural Health Centre and children's classes at BNHC and Smile 2 Live studios. When she is not teaching she is an avid writer with four published books including the 'True Diaries Series' of books and 100 Little Words on Parenthood. She is currently working on a theatrical memoir of all her escapades. Charlie presents a weekly radio show for Coastway Hospital Radio for Brighton and spends her free time with her husband and son, both of who love to dance.
We've been going to Brighton Dance and Drama since Charlie started the classes and we love it! Charlie is a great teacher, and makes the classes relaxed and fun for the all the children, and never makes them do anything they would be uncomfortable with. Amia really enjoys going - rain or shine, even if she's really tired - I think we've only missed one or two classes during the last three years, so that's probably the highest recommendation we could give.
