I am able to offer specialised mathematics tuition and revision boosters from SATs to GCSE for primary and secondary aged children and young adults. As a tutor with a calm approach I am able to take a step back, something that I have learn from my own experience as a parent.
At primary level by using games that make mathematics fun and more enjoyable for children. I believe mathematics must be linked to real life practical skills and situations like using money, weighing and measuring and telling the time.
At secondary level, I am able to work with young adolescents through difficult concepts like solving simultaneous equations, long division, the rules of indices and negative numbers or standard form. I can offer revision guidance and tips. In addition, I can direct learners to websites and applications (apps) that they can use to work independently to improve their mathematical skills.
I know how mathematics is taught in schools today and also how that differs from the ways that many parents learnt themselves: a frustration for many parents when helping with homework.
I am able to boost children’s self-esteem and confidence as I understand how children progress and develop their mathematic skills. If progression stops or falters I know where and how to look for difficulties and more importantly how to solve them.
I hold a current CRB enhanced clearance as a private tutor and through the college I work at.

Mike is a tutor who clearly knows his stuff. He has an excellent manner, calm and soothing. The girls never find him intimidating. He has a gentle fun loving nature and we often hear the girls laughing throughout the lessons.
He has particularly helped with number awareness, especially helping with our eldest daughter who has a non-verbal disability. We get weekly verbal feedback which is very useful, we will in future ask for a work plan so that we can ensure any work we do ourselves with the girls is in line with where they are at with Mike.
Our son's tuition started in May of this year (2012) with Mike. Prior to this, I had tried to help Ben myself, but progress had been slow and Ben's attitude to Maths was very negative. Since Mike started tutoring Ben, we have seen a more positive attitude towards Maths. Ben struggled with most of the basic concepts of Maths but with Mikes help, via games and the way he teaches, Ben now has a better understanding and uses strategies to work things out for himself. Mike's general approach / techniques (i.e. use of games, teaching in a fun way) have built Ben's confidence and this has been reflected in Ben's more positive approach towards Maths. Ben looks forward to Mike coming and I think the cost has been worth it to see my son enjoying Maths and being more confident as a result.
Kangaroos is a play scheme for children/young people aged from 6 years upwards, with a variety of additional needs.
I have known Mike Gould for about eight years, initially as a friend and then more recently as a Support Worker at Kangaroos. He works about three out of four Saturdays a month with the PALS children, ie aged 6 to 12 years, and the BreakAway Group whose members are aged 12 to 19 years. He also works twice a month at the Youth Club whose members are aged 19 to 25 years. As a Support Worker, he works either one to one with individuals or is responsible for a small group. This may be at base or on trips out. Our members have a variety of additional needs. Some are within the autistic spectrum, some have downs syndrome or are wheelchair users. He is a valued member of our team. He is very flexible and never minds what he is asked to do or which of the children or young people or groups he is asked to work with. Wherever he works he takes his role seriously and end
Maths has not been one of Isabel's favourite subjects so decided to opt for 1:1 lessons whilst she was in year 6 at primary school. Mike has been an inspiration and has successfully shown Isabel that maths can be fun and that it is a useful tool in everyday situations. He is kind, patient and cares passionately about her progress. Since secondary school she has moved four significant levels (4b to 5a) which has illustrated an outstanding achievement to which we thank Mike enormously.

As a tutor with a calm approach I am able to take a step back, something that I have learnt from my own experience as a parent. I have a strong belief that everybody is able to learn mathematics, although may not have always been given the opportunity to achieve their full potential. My passion is to make mathematics enjoyable and re-ignite the mathematical flame within.
Mike tutored Daniel for two terms last year ahead of the SATs and after we had moved and Daniel joined a new school. Mike was always patient and methodical with Daniel and with me, was always reliable (turning up on time and doing what he promised). I believe Mike helped Daniel achieve his SATs grade through reaffirming his knowledge of the basics and through confidence building. Mike could have perhaps challenged Daniel a little more but this is because Daniel has now moved to the top set and no longer needs an out of school tutor. Mike is a nice gentle guy and works at a great school!
