I have played the violin for over 30 years, and trained under Gerhardt Dreschler and Ralph Shaw in the North West where I grew up. I played in orchestras and ensembles whilst at school and university, plus the Chester Philharmonic Orchestra. I currently teach classical and folk violin to a wide and varied range of students, from five years old to retired, and maintain a full pass rate for my students in the graded ABRSM exams, with a high percentage of distinctions.
Lessons are available for students of all ages (5 years upwards) and abilities, tailored to suit each individual's requirements, whether it be working through exams or purely for enjoyment.
As a guitarist, singer and composer, I also teach beginner guitar. This is in a more informal manner to those seeking to play mainly for enjoyment (although I do put students through the lower ABRSM grades where required).
I am a member of the Musicians’ Union, through which I have public liability insurance. References and testimonials can be available.
I live in Twyford, just outside Winchester with my partner Avril. Please visit my website for further information.
Winchester and surrounding areas. I mainly teach at home, but depending on availability of time lessons can also take place at the student's home (within close proximity to Winchester - time/travel costs will be added as appropriate).
Lessons cost £14.50 per 30 minutes, £29 per hour.
Lessons are mainly based around school term times, with payment generally taken in advance per term (or half term by arrangement). Additional lessons can also be available during the holidays - these are agreed on an adhoc basis according to mutual availability.
Originally I was looking for someone who could teach violin and guitar to our children, and could teach a range of styles from rock to classical as what the children were being taught at school was very uninspiring. Darren has taught all 3 of our children a range of instruments over the last five or six years, he has been teaching our youngest son violin and guitar since he was 4, and he taught my daughter how to play Irish fiddle tunes. He has succeeded in fully engaging my teenage son teaching him Green Day guitar tunes that he wanted to learn on electric guitar. Darren’s a good role model for the kids as well as being an inspiring musician, I can recommend him unreservedly, and he is trustworthy, reliable, gifted, and hardworking. The children all respect and admire Darren and look forward to their lessons on which they make great progress, I really feel I get a lot more than I pay for.
Bowen has been having violin lessons for three years with Darren and in that time he’s gone from complete beginner to going for his grade four exam. Darren’s a very good teacher, he has a great teaching style, not pushy or too much repetition, and he focuses on the joy of playing and music rather than exams and grades. He’s got a way of encouraging Bowen to move forward, he’s not too strict. The violin is a difficult instrument and it takes a lot of practise and perseverance, so we’re very happy with his progress, and most importantly he enjoys learning and playing it.

Caleb does violin with Darren whilst Reuben does guitar and what we like most is the way Darren has tailored the lessons to both the boys as they're very different from each other. Caleb is very interested in classical and folk music and is quite sensible and structured in what he does, so his lessons are very deliberate and planned, I’d say a more formal type of music lesson. In comparison Reuben loves rock music so Darren has really adapted his lessons for him, looking at Queen and that type of music, singing along with the playing, much less of a formal structure! Darren is very comfortable with both of them, his manner is absolutely brilliant. I’m normally very picky but I struggle to think of anything I would improve. He communicates well with us and the children, I’d recommend him highly and both the boys love their lessons.
