How Much Time Should You Invest?

Facebook is still the most popular and commonly used marketing tool for businesses both large and small.

A recent study by the Social Media Examiner found that 52% of marketers would select Facebook if asked to choose only one social media platform to use for their business. LinkedIn was chosen as the second.

The same study, quoted these findings on how much time other businesses are investing in Facebook.

This shows that the most popular given amount of time for businesses to spend on Facebook is between 1 to 5 hours a week. Closely followed by 6 to 10 hours a week.

How to relate this to your business?

1. Research your target market

Each business sector will put more or less emphasis on Facebook marketing depending on the nature of their target market. If your primarily focused on the B2B (Business to Business) sector, the chances are you may spend less time on Facebook and more time on LinkedIn.

Alternatively if you are in the B2C (Business to Consumer) sector, you are likely to spend more time on Facebook, as that’s where consumers spend the majority of their time. And to break this down even further. Look at how active your target market are, and tailor your strategy to account for this.

For example if your market is young parents, you might research popular young parent groups and forums to find out how often they are posting and responding to updates.

You can use this information to help you decide how much of your day you will need to spend engaging with your followers and how frequently you can expect them to respond.

2. Compare yourself against your competitors

  • How many followers do they have compared to you?
  • How many posts are they putting out a week?
  • How often are they updating their photos?
  • How quick do they respond to comments?

By comparing yourself to your competitors on these points, you should form an understanding on whether you are spending more, or less time than your competitors and can make adjustments accordingly.

3. Identify your goals

Not to be over looked when deciding how much time to invest in Facebook.

With a clear understanding of what you want to gain from your Facebook marketing, you will be able to better identify how many hours you will need to spend to achieve this.

Consider the following when identifying your goals:

  • What do you want to achieve with your marketing? (Increase Engagement, Increase awareness?)
  • Will Facebook complement your other marketing efforts?
  • Do you have necessary the skill set?
  • Will you be able to keep your level of activity throughout the year?
