KalliKids Interview with Mike Yardy

How did you start playing cricket as a child?

I started to go to a cricket club at the age of six but apparently was so bad, the coach's daughter used to bowl me balls away from the other kids! By the age of 10/11 I was playing for Sussex and it was still all for fun and enjoyment.

I really only started to think of it as a career at 16/17, despite the Careers Officer suggesting I go into the army.

What do you think cricket gave you as a child and then as an adult?

Cricket can give so much to children and adults too. Enjoyment, interacting with others, team building and an interest out side of school.

When I watch children feeding balls to each other and playing different positions, I can see that they are learning that they all get more out of it by working together and helping each other as a team.

How many children do you have now?

I have three children and really enjoy being a Dad and watching them enjoy their activities.

What activities do they like and do you want them to be cricketers?

Our children go to dance classes, football, tennis, cricket and swimming. We are not pushy parents, forcing them to compete and be the best - we encourage them to do the sports and activities that they enjoy.

What one piece of advice do you have for Mums and Dads out there?

Sports are all about enjoyment. Don't force your kids to do something they don't like!
