Babies have a real affinity with water, and because they’ve spent 9 months floating in the womb, being in warm water feels much more familiar to them than being on dry land. However, this early confidence usually diminishes with time, and can even turn to fear. That’s one of the main reasons why we believe in starting them young. But we never swim a baby against their wishes, and we always incorporate lots of bonding, fun and socialising, so you can be sure that a Water Baby is a happy baby.
As well as being really good fun and energetic, structured lessons are a wonderfully sociable activity, and classmates often become friends and a real source of support.
The Water Babies course teaches using voice commands and learning to respond to these is excellent for your baby’s mental development. Despite looking gentle, the lessons provide your baby with a complete physical workout. Studies have shown that participating babies have improved sleeping and eating patterns – a definite bonus!
Start as soon as you like …
You can begin your Water Babies journey at the start of any term — and the earlier, the better! Our youngest-ever Water Baby was just 2 days old (aaah!). In their first year, a baby’s brain grows more rapidly than at any other time, so it makes sense to start early and maximise their exposure to learning experiences in a variety of environments. And what’s more, NHS guidelines say babies don’t need to have had their vaccinations before they can swim.
…and just carry on
Our Water Babies progress seamlessly through our programme, having great fun while all the time building their confidence and independence in the water. Most of our toddlers can swim short distances by around the age of 2, and have mastered vital skills including how to turn around and hold on and, where possible, how to clamber out. All of this is a great source of pride for you and them (and us!), and offers fantastic safety skills should they ever fall into water. However, children lack the strength and co-ordination to swim properly until they’re 3 or 4: their little bodies just aren’t proportioned for swimming on the surface — so they won’t be learning front crawl just yet.
‘Finally, we’re the only swimming company to have won six national awards in the last five years. Reflecting the fact that we’re really good at what we do.’
We hold classes in Islington - Holloway - Docklands - Isle of Dogs - Limehouse - Stratford - Barkingside - Snaresbrook - Chadwell Heath - Loughton - Harlow .
Our multi-award winning classes are £150 for a 10 week course.
We have been going since Rocco was 11 weeks old. What I like is the small classes, you really get to know everyone. The teachers are friendly and great with the kids. The pool is warm! A lovely environment which is hard to find with swimming pools. The classes are varied but also consistent and I can really see how Rocco is progressing. He loves the water and is very confident - people are always amazed how good he is! The only room for improvement would be the changing rooms, purely because if you have a young baby it is a little tricky as there are no changing tables.
My youngest son has been having lessons with Water Babies since he was about six months old and he is now three. You can really see how his confidence has developed in the water. He is always happy and excited about going to his lessons. Hannah is a brilliant teacher - always punctual which is important for a 30 minute class - and energetic, keeping the lessons fun for the children so they are really engaged, and learn without even realising! Her explanations are clear and she always gives good feedback on his progress.
Waterbabies is great. I've been taking my daughter since she was about 6 weeks old. The teachers are fantastic and lessons are always fun and engaging.
Our second child is now swimming with Water babies. She enjoys it and makes good progress. The lessons gradually build all the skills they need to swim independently. Our eldest child could swim when she left and this has stood her in good stead for further lessons. The teacher is competent, professional, and friendly.

When Hannah Yeomans first took her son to Water Babies in the North, little did she think she'd be starting a chain of events that would see her leaving her career in fashion. But leave she did, as she returned to her roots and set up her own classes in North East London with one of her best childhood friends, Lucy Sullivan.
After her own careers in advertising and the Metropolitan Police, Lucy was probably equally surprised to be getting back into the water, having been a keen swimmer in her youth.
Since starting the business, Lucy has become a mother to two children and Hannah now has three young boys.
My daughter is nearly two now, and loves her Water Babies class. The best thing for us has been the flexibility - the classes are local, and I was able to sit poolside and watch when my wife was in the water with her, so I could also share her first experiences. They take any fear that you may have away, and it really is a straightforward process, getting the children used to the water, and we are now really starting to see the benefits. Their communication is great, we are always kept up to date, and you build up a good relationship with the teacher, and the other parents in the class.
