Streetfunk is Brighton and Hove's largest hip hop dance company. We offer street dance classes and holiday clubs for all ages and abilities at various locations across Brighton. Street dance has become popular over recent years, with children of both sexes, and is one of the most well-loved dance styles with boys of all ages.
Learning to dance has so much to offer children. A dance class is a great leveller- kids from all walks of life and all academic abilities perform on a level playing field. Dance was one of the earliest methods of artistic expression and continues to provide a valuable outlet and nurturing experience for all. Dancing is highly social and children learn new communications skills, how to trust, cooperate and work as part of a team without having to compete with their peers.
If you have a shy child, dance can be a good way of allowing them to interact with other kids and improve their social confidence. Children often find dance a great emotional release, those suffering from stress or other challenges can find ease in the creative expression of dance. As kids develop a greater sense of their physicality, they start to feel more comfortable in their own skin, and develop a positive attitude towards their own bodies.
A dance class improves a child's listening ability, memory/ spatial awareness, and awareness of others within a group. Dancing uses both sides of the brain simultaneously in a coordinated way, one half is controlling the physicality and movement, the other the creative and artistic expression.

Both Lucy and Ralph go to Streetfunk and they go to 3 or 4 classes each week. We started because Ralph wanted to dance with other boys and not just girls. The positive atmosphere at Streetfunk is infectious: all the kids enjoy themselves, respect each other and really want to get involved. JP, the teacher, is outgoing, enthusiastic, supportive and has a great relationship with everyone in the class. The kids go because they love it and they want to dance not because they feel forced. The Streetfunk team and all the kids respect each other whether they are talented or beginners. Nothing compares to Streetfunk: I highly recommend it.
My daughter went to the very first Streetfunk classes over 6 years ago and has been going ever since, with my son now joining her. The best thing about Streetfunk is the way that JP engages with the children - he helps them to learn and enjoy dance. He does run the classes in a disciplined way though, so you know they're not just there to muck about. The kids love it and it's the one after school activity that neither of them ever moan about attending!
Kane has been going to Streetfunk now for 5 years. He's worked his way up from the minis to advanced and loves every minute of it.JP and Annelies have now opened up Marina Studios (Brighton Marina), so great for parking and parents can always pop over to the shops while the kids are dancing.
Having had 3 children attend street funk classes, they have all loved it. The ethos of street funk includes hard work respect etc is really outlined and encouraged to the kids. They get to perform in an annual show in the summer. Great value for money and highly comparable with other dance set ups.

My name is Frankie Penfold, I am 24 years old and have always danced! I have studied many forms of dancing; as a toddler I went to ballet lessons and continued classes until I turned 17, I have also studied jazz, modern, tap, ballroom and Latin American. The main form of dancing I studied was freestyle disco. I took exams in every style I danced but also competed in festivals with my modern. When we had competitions in Freestyle Disco, this was a different level of competing! I was lucky enough to be sponsored to do this, which gave me an extra boost of confidence.
I feel so lucky to be doing a job I love, not many of us can say that! My main aim in teaching is to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves and to make sure I, and they, are pushing themselves to be the best they can be. Cheesy but true... I have been teaching with my mum since the age of 13, I then started teaching by myself at 19 and was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to work for JP Omari within Streetfunk at the age of 21. I then fell pregnant and took some time out but I am pleased to say I am teaching five days a week alongside JP and loving every minute!
Hayley started dancing as a child and found a passion for hip hop 10 years ago. Working her way through various classes, she was invited to teach for Brighton and Hove's biggest Hip Hop Company Streetfunk alongside JP Omari. Now, having worked as a Street Dance Teacher for 4 years, she is very experienced in teaching children and adults in this style. Hayley has taught dance workshops in Spain and Holland as well as toured the UK as part of a dance troupe. Her love of dance has inspired many people and through her teaching Hayley has helped both children and adults realise their potential and discover and improve their skills.
JP Omari is the Founder and Director of Streetfunk, a Hip Hop dance school / company he set up to teach young people, from the tender age of 4, and adults to dance and share his passion. Born and raised in Rome, JP has created his own unique energetic style, drawing from a rich and eclectic range of musical influences.
His belief in dancing with funk, “flava” and having fun; in achievement through respect, discipline and hard work; and in the art form of Hip Hop, has helped Streetfunk to become one of the biggest Hip Hop schools in the South East spreading across Brighton & Hove, Portslade and Lewes (East Sussex).
JP performs, teaches, hosts events and judges throughout the UK and internationally, working with: The Floor Crusaders – an award winning UK breakdance crew; SickStep – the famous American hip hop dance crew; The Urban Playground – who combine Parkour with dance in site-specific street performance working with two of the artform’s creators and; Urban Strides (UK’s Streetdance specialists). He has also performed for chart topping artists Dizzee Rascal and Sean Paul.
The winner of Vauxhall Tribes Regional Hip Hop Competition 2006 & their National Competition in 2007; choreographer of a short dance film for Channel 4; JP is also known as a competitor from BBC1’s 2006 series Strictly Dance Fever.
Streetfunk is a Brighton & Hove based Hip Hop dance company / school, providing classes for all ages, ranging from 4 yrs old to adults, across Sussex. It was founded by JP Omari who is widely known in the UK Hip Hop dance scene, as well as for his dedicated work in the community dance sector over the years.
Although Hip Hop dance is at the forefront of Streetfunk’s activities, what is most important to JP are the qualities that make one not only a good dancer but also a decent, respectable and confident person through hard work, discipline and respect. In class, children learn the importance of these qualities alongside the foundations of Hip Hop styles.
Streetfunk is more than a dance school… It’s a family! Come and join us and see what a difference we can bring to your child’s life!
All three of my kids have been to Streetfunk classes over the past six years and they all absolutely love it! It is hard to teach teenage boys to dance but JP gets the pitch just right. The kids love going and love hanging out with their friends. From my point of view, Annelies communicates really well, is reliable (no cancelled lessons as she gets replacement teachers if needed) and is really accommodating. The classes are sooo good – you really do get a dance class. I highly recommend Streetfunk and suggest parents take a big bottle of water for each class as the kids will get LOTS of exercise.
