Sing and Sign Brighton in Brighton

  1. Sing and Sign was developed with the help of Speech and Language experts and launched in January 2001, the "Sing and Sign" programme has since taught tens of thousands of parents across the UK how to sign with their babies and encourage amazing early communication. As a part of typical development before speech is well established, babies naturally use a combination of gestures and sounds to help their parents understand them. For example they may point, shake their heads, clap their hands and wave "bye-bye". Now is a good time to introduce some extra gestures to help your baby communicate. It's easy to do and your baby will really enjoy it! Why not try milk, more, change nappy, or tired? Baby signing is wonderfully rewarding and fantastic fun. You will be amazed by what your baby is capable of telling you before being able to talk!

How does Sing and Sign teach these baby signs?

Sing and Sign's original and unique approach has revolutionised baby signing in this country. Everyone knows nursery rhymes and action songs are great fun and musical activities help stimulate language development. Sing and Sign combines the benefits of both music and baby signing. We teach a wide range of signs using some traditional and some specially written or adapted songs. What makes Sing and Sign special is that every sign used in song relates to those important first words of a baby's world! Nappies and bath time, hiding games and bedtime. You name it, we have a song about it, and the babies just love to hear them! With a high standard of educational content, this is a relaxing, enjoyable and unpressured way for you and your baby to learn.

We don't use too many signs within the songs, just enough to highlight the key words. Many of the tunes we use are traditional and familiar melodies, this ensures all songs are easy to sign along with for the beginner

    Which signs do we use?

Our signs are widely used by Speech and Language professionals, nurseries and schools across the UK. Sing and Sign is largely compatible with Makaton, Say It and Sign It and other sign supporting systems designed to be used WITH speech and based on the signs of British Sign Language (BSL).

We've really enjoyed going to the Sing & Sign classes. Sasha is very flexible as my daughter sometimes comes along to the Saturday sessions. We think the classes have really helped the boys and they do lots of signing at home. The boys were one when we started the classes and they had started to get frustrated at not being able to communicate so it was perfect for them. They have picked up lots of the signs and love the music. I think starting at six months would be ideal. The rooms are small and self-contained so there are not too many distractions for them. I find the classes focussed and lively and what's great is the amount of information you learn as a parent. We've also been to the summer classes as well which are good fun, and it’s nice to have something like that when most of the other classes break for the holidays. I have also found Sasha very receptive to feedback on the venue and quick to problem solve.

    • Mum and Dad of Zak, 18 months, Brighton

Zak has been going along to Sing and Sign classes for a year or so and really enjoys them. As we are talking about this in front of him, he is now asking to go! We think the classes are great as Zak can communicate with us and we can really see the results. The teachers are excellent: they hold the attention of the children, interact well and you can see they enjoy their job. We have also learnt a lot too. It is worth noting that at the beginning it is the parents who learn the most and then one day, the children “get it” and start communicating. You really need to sign to your child consistently every day to really get the most out of it! We think the money spent on the Sing and Sign classes is the best money we have spent as parents.

Both our daughters went to Sing and Sign from about 9 months old. We were impressed by Sasha's enthusiasm, warmth and skills. The kids loved it and picked up the signs well; it really did seem to help them develop their communication. They still sing the songs!

I've been taking my daughter to class for 4 weeks. She really loves the atmosphere of the class and how the teacher interacts with her...really fun! And she has already learnt some useful signs that we use at home although needs more practice. I brought a CD so going to try to practice at home.

We have been going to Sing and Sign since Bella was 7 months old. In the beginning in was a lot of me learning and repeating lots at home (which is very important) and all of a sudden my daughter starts to sign. She can communicate what she wants/needs and so tantrums never happen x
