Children experience an imaginative approach to dance encouraging musicality and creativity through movement. Inspired by a range of music from African drumming to classical ballet music and using props such as streamers, flags, scarves and stretchy fabric, they will explore a whole new world of movement possibilities and produce dance which is truly their own. There is no uniform and children are gently encouraged to participate. There is always the option of sitting out and watching if a child is not ready to join in. My aim is to make the sessions as enjoyable as I can so everyone can relax and have fun! We run regular classes in the Brighton area as well as holiday workshops and school workshops.
Stories and role play form a large part of the class as children use their imaginations to move and dance like animals, characters, machines and even some quite abstract things such as wind. Props such as floaty scarves and shaky streamers are used to encourage children to explore their movement further and sometimes we dress up to get into character. Each half term we work on new dances inspired by seasonal themes and celebrations. Through regular attendance of these classes, children gain confidence in their movement and show pride in the dances that they create.
As with the pre-school classes there is still a strong emphasis on imaginative role play through dance and movement and we continue to follow seasonal themes. However, the dances are now a little more structured and the children are invited to take more of a creative lead in producing their own movement for the dances. More recognisable dance moves and technique are introduced and children start to learn how to reproduce and repeat sequences of movement. At the end of term we show our work to parents and friends.
A contemporary based dance class that explores a variety of dance styles including African, Brazilian and Hip Hop. Using the dance moves that they learn children work together to make some new and very funky dances which always offer the chance of individual creative input.
There are many opportunities to perform what they have learnt to an audience. In the past, Groovy Moves have danced at The Brighton Dome, Hove Town Hall, The Windmill Theatre, for the for the Children's Parade, at Hanover Day and Patchfest. Last year they were also Junior Finalists in the Dance for Life Competition. For the last two years we have also made a short dance films.

Anna has been going to Magic Moves with Kate for a term or so and she loves it. The classes are full of fun imaginative play like puffing up as a balloon and pretending to be a caterpillar. Kate brings in great props and the mix of music is fun too. You can tell Anna enjoys it as she will show Dad in the evening how to be a frog and repeat things during the week. I really recommend the classes as the children use their bodies in different ways and have lots of fun. Even little Isla learns from it as she observes her big sister!
Rosa went to Magic Moves classes from the age of two to four. She and I really liked the classes because they are informal, fun and full of wiggling, moving and pretending to be something. It was perfect for pre-school age and now Rosa does ballet in a much more formal environment, I can really see how good it was for her at the time. Kate was always good with the children, encouraging them positively and giving stickers. She is also happy for Mums to chat quietly so it became a great social network for me too. Kate's props are brilliant including bat wings and caterpillar costumes made from tubes of stretchy material, and the music includes all sorts from Vivaldi to Car Wash! I recommend Magic Moves without hesitation.
Kate runs a weekly dance class at our nursery for children aged between 1 and 4 years and has done so for the last 4 years. It's great as Kate adapts the dancing for each age group and she is very good at gauging the mood of the group and adjusting the lesson accordingly. Her dance lessons are also themed ie: Winter, Christmas, Spring. Kate manages to capture the children's attention and there is always much excitement when it is "Kate's Dancing Day"!
My son absolutely adores this class and looks forward to it all week. Kate engages with the children's imagination really well. She always has nice props and the recurrent routine means that the children feel confident in what they are doing. I highly recommend this class, especially for children between 2 and 4.

Kate trained at London Contemporary Dance School and has been teaching dance for 14 years. She has also danced and choreographed for several dance groups including contemporary, West African and Samba based dance groups. She has two children of her own.
The Magic Moves Dance lessons are great for Molly's age group as they have a good balance of structure and fun. Kate is really warm and friendly and the children respond really well to her. The lessons use lots of props, are very creative and the music is always fun. It's been good as well as Molly has made good friendships within the class. Molly loves going, much more so than some of the other classes we attend!
