I have used Curious About a number of times over the last few years. They give a great reason to go out walking with children by providing interest and a bit of competition. Curious About gave us a guided walk and to find our way around the children had to spot clues along the way. We have done several walks when away on holiday in Nottingham, Southall, Stamford and York. The boys enjoyed finding their way around without everything being presented on a plate and also the outdoor element.
I came across ‘Curious About’ - which is an online website for self guided walks. Here, you can either download your own copy to take out on your walk or you can have it sent to you. I downloaded our walk, which was for 4 of us, all in our 60’s, around Bristol recently. I found it was easy to use and we can use it again to walk with my grandchildren, as it is suitable for all age groups. Bargain really! I do a lot of walking, but using ‘Curious about’ actually highlights more of the things you might have missed, for example the history of the area and other things I would never have noticed on our walks. It also guides you safely across the road, it’s really very good. The one I printed off for Bristol gave me two walks both for about two hours; we did one in the morning then had a break for lunch before doing the other in the afternoon. I would definitely used ‘Curious About‘ again; it took all the work out of planning it myself!

‘Curious About’ allows you to buy booklets for a series of walks for children in different towns across the country. The walks show you new things about the towns – even ones that you may have thought you knew very well – and they take you off the beaten track a little. You get given a route with to follow and questions to answer but you can tailor it to the children with you’re with and do as much or as little of it as you like. One example was a walk we did in Harrogate; we took 2 thirteen year olds and a ten year old who was probably the one that enjoyed it the most. We started in the park which was fun for them and the first question was about who created the carving in the park. There are also pictures for the children to match up with sites along their walk to help them find out where things are. The walks teach children lots of new things whilst being fun at the same time. I really like the fact that you get to discover interesting little things and nooks and crannies you may not have known about before.
