Ariel Company Theatre Play about Bullying raises over £250

Ariel Company Theatre took their most recent play DNA into the community with a special performance at Hazelwick School Crawley to year 11 students. The students are studying DNA, by writer Dennis Kelly for GCSE English so this was the ideal opportunity to bring the play to life.

The production is a powerful, hard-hitting story which deals with many of the issues that adolescents can face, particularly bullying, unrequited love and gang culture. The teenagers do something bad, really bad to a fellow student, then panic and cover the whole thing up. When they find that their cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their once fractious lives, where is the incentive to put things right?

Caroline Parker, English Teacher at Hazelwick said “It was amazing to see this play come alive and I have no doubt it will certainly help my student to enhance their work". Deputy Head Matt Chalmers added “I want to congratulations all the cast for such a well-acted and directed piece of theatre”.

Following the play the students enjoyed half an hour of questions and answers with the actors and many really interesting topics were raised as a result.

All attending students were asked to make a donation to see the play. Due to the content of the play, and the fact that the previous week was Anti Bullying week Ariel decided that they would like the money to be donated to anti-bullying charity, Bullying UK, see www.bullying.co.uk. Over £250 pounds was raised for this worthwhile cause which helps individuals, schools and parents with advice and support to combat bullying.

Ariel Company Theatre runs award-winning drama academies for children aged 5 – 19 years in Crawley, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, East Grinstead and Steyning. Ariel’s next play will be a World premiere, as part of National TheatreConnections, Youth Theatre Festival. The company have been selected to perform Edelweiss Pirates, written by BAFTA award winning Ayub Khan Din. The play will be performed locally at the Ifield Barn, Crawley in March 2015. Set in World War II, this true story is a must see for anyone that is interested in war time plays and how German youths rebelled against Hitler.
