What's Happening in Edinburgh Issue #4

30 Jun 2017 Posted by: Stuart Willis

It’s July and the school holidays are upon us… where has the year gone?

Have you created a ‘Summer Holidays Bucket List’ with your family yet? It’s a great way to bond as a family and help to avoid the almost inevitable ‘But I’m bored’ whining that of comes towards the end of the summer break. Sit down as a family and create a wish list of all the things you would like to do. These don’t all have to be trips or expensive activities, why not include a book you would like to read, baking a cake, building a fort or even having a water fight… the possibilities are endless!

We have had a busy few weeks as we are getting ready to move house (a great idea at 7 months pregnant!), so were pleased to escape the boxes on Saturday morning and discover the Monkey Barrel Comedy Café on Blair Street. This spacious café, which transforms into a comedy venue in the evening, is currently running a series of pop up children’s events on Saturday mornings including Lady Shona’s Family Comedy Showcase, Moo Music and Little Crafters. Teddy had a great time getting his hip hop moves on with Step It Up Dance, afterwards we enjoyed a lovely cup of tea and a cake and took advantage of the toys and books in the play area. Definitely worth a visit!

Billionaire Boy, Thursday 6th July, 6.30pm, Newhailes Outdoor Theatre

The National Trust for Scotland property, Newhailes, just outside Musselburgh, is hosting an outdoor theatre production of David Walliams’ ‘Billionaire Boy’. Meet Mr Spud and his son Joe who are holding a garage sale, selling the last of their belongings in order to buy some food… but everything changes when they become overnight billionaires due to Mr Spud’s invention of a new toilet roll!

Adult £12.00, Child £7.00 Conc £10.00, Family £35.00

Families are encouraged to bring picnic rugs or low seating, there is no wet weather provision, so please ensure you are adequately dressed/equipped.

Tickets are non-refundable.

Fire Station Community Open Day, 15th July 11am – 3.30pm, McDonald Road Fire Station

An amazing opportunity to get up close to (and clamber all over!) the fabulous engines and meet the crew at McDonald Road fire station. We attended last year, and although it is a very busy event (be prepared to queue to sit in the vehicles), it was a highlight of our summer!
