5 simple tips to beat January blues

14 Jan 2016 Posted by: A KalliKids Champion

So the festivities are over, the decorations are packed away, the days are dark and cold and we are all broke. Doesn’t sound like a fun way to start the New Year does it? KalliKids Champion Vikki has some tips on how to beat the blues.

Many of us start to struggle with what has been termed the January Blues this time of year and it’s not hard to see why, but life is a gift and we should not allow the season to affect how we enjoy it.

So to help beat the blues and give you some focus this January I have put together a list of things for you to think about over the coming weeks.

1. Stick to those resolutions

Yes okay, we all made resolutions that usually we don’t stick to for more than a few weeks but why not this year try to set a small manageable goals through out the year to keep you on track.

For example, if you hastily announced on NYE that you wanted to lose 3 stone this year and now wished that you had thought it through a little more, don’t be disheartened. That was your goal, now lets make it work. Break your goal down into manageable chunks. Try aiming for a 2lb a week weight loss. With a balanced diet and a little exercise plus the odd treat, so as not to deprive yourself, your goal really can be achieved. If you manage to lose your 2lb target each week within 6 months you would have reached your original goal!

Now obviously I understand that not everyone’s resolution will be weight loss but you can apply the same principle to most things – slow and steady wins the race.

2. Exercise

While this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, a small amount of exercise daily can help lift your mood. I’m not saying join a gym and pound away hours on the treadmill (unless of course that’s your thing) but even going for a half an hour walk each day will get your blood pumping and make you feel better about yourself.

3. Drink more water

Okay, so everyone’s heard that we should drink 2-3 litres of water a day, but keeping your body hydrated really is the key to feeling better.

Our bodies are made up of over 50% water, so to keep us working as we should it is important to keep hydrated!

This time of year it is all too easy to substitute water with those lovely warm caffeine enriched beverages but they really do not help to keep you hydrated, so when that warm fuzzy feeling wears off you just end up feeling more tired and lethargic!

4. Plan a holiday

Having something to look forward too will give you a focus and something to get excited about. In all honesty if you are anything like me, planning the holiday will be nearly as much fun as going away!

5. Be positive

When it’s dark and gloomy outside it is easy to feel down and a bit depressed but there really are good things all around us. Try to focus on those and help lift your mood. Make an effort to see friends and family, take time out to play with your little ones or go for a walk in the winter sunshine.

Take time to do what ever makes you happy.

Happy New Year!
